100 Word Challenge: Junky Treasure

"Where’d you get this?" he asked turning the filthy cross over in his hands. "Jist worthless junk."

The girl reached out for the tarnished relic. "It's mine."

"You messin' in the alley, girlie?"

"I found it in the trash."

"Well it ain’t yers and we don’t need no more garbage in here," he said dropping her treasure to the floor.

Twenty years later she perched on the edge of the chair as the man peered over his glasses at her while cradling the piece as if it were the Mona Lisa. "Where did you get this? It could be priceless."

Written in response to Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge.  The prompt and inspiration was the word worthless.  Please, mosey on over to Lou's, the host for the challenge, and read how other writers spin the prompt for the week, worthless.

Wonderfully worked. I like that you wrote your dialog in dialect. Nicely done.

Tara...Thanks for dropping by. I'm using the 100 word challenge to work on bits of dialog, as I've said in earlier comments it's not my forte and needs a lot of work. Thank you for your kind comments.

Good Saturday afternoon to you, Teresa.
I like to imagine that it was something that was in a painting done by Rembrandt, or worn around the neck of one of the Czarina's of Russia...

Another terrific story! I hadn't heard of this challenge before, but now that you've alerted me to it I'll have to check it out at Lou's.

Hello Aurora and thanks for stopping by. Ohhhh I like your imagination! I'm sure that's what it was...something worn by the royals of Europe! I remembered a story I'd read about a woman in England or Scotland who found a cross in the trash and took it out. She discovered that it was a medieval cross worth over half a million dollars. What a fine, eh?

Felicitas...welcome to Write in Amazement! The 100 word challenge is a lot of fun and is graciously hosted by Lou. It's always a challenge to make something sound sensible with so few words and I'm amazed at the wonderful writings that come from this challenge. Do join in!

Congratulations on being VV's pick of the week. I take heart from your entry. I knew there was a reason my basement overflows with, um, treasure.
